Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles initially released the “Bulli” van when the need for a delivery van arose in 1947, and it was designed to encompass all the needs of the various industries.
They have since continually adapted the designs in the many generations of Transporter vans. The needs of the various professionals have been taken into account, skilfully adding innovative solutions to their needs.
Along with the all-important clever storage system, the Transporter van series has many standard features aimed at driver comfort. These include driver’s adjustable seat with lumbar support, cloth upholstery, air conditioner, leather steering wheel with height adjustor, ‘Composition Colour’ radio with USB, AUX and SD input with steering wheel controls, Bluetooth® phone and audio streaming, central locking, cruise control, immobiliser (electronic), electric windows and outside mirrors.
Special needs in the planning of the driver’s section can be catered for, such as changing the seat configuration from two single seats to a double bench seat. A second sliding door is an option. Numerous storage options are offered in the cabin to help with the planning of a long working day. The various storage options, compartments and holders keep the interior in perfect order. There is a variety of bottle and cup holders.
The safety features comprise hill-start assist, ESP, reverse parking sensors, driver and passenger airbags, ABS, TCS, ESP and EBD*. MCB, or multi-collision braking, prompts braking after a collision, in order to prevent further collisions. The total load volume ranges from 5.8m3 to 9.3m3, with two wheelbase and three roof heights. The payload is up to 1.2 tonnes.
Designed to improve visibility, the Light & Sight package consists of an automatically dimming rear view mirror, offering protection against dazzling lights, and a rain sensor activates the windscreen wipers from the first few raindrops. The Transporter Crewvan has plenty of space for up to five passengers, along with ample load space, and the double sliding doors allow passengers get in and out. Additional standard equipment on the Transporter Crewvan includes the exterior sliding door on the right side, sliding windows in both left and right sliding doors, plus a three-seater bench behind the front seats, which folds and tips and is removable. There is rubber flooring in the rear.
The lifting tailgate is a standard feature with all normal and medium roofs. The large opening height makes the vehicle easy to load and unload, and serves as a shelter in wet weather. Six or eight adjustable lashing eyes are standard to secure goods using tensioning straps, depending on the wheelbase. There is also an extremely robust hardboard trim in the passenger and load compartments . The hardboard panels are fitted from the floor to the roof frame, or half height in vehicles with windows. A full height partition with a window is also an available option.
The 2.0L turbo-diesel engine is available in two output levels. Due to the BlueMotion Technology (BMT) system, which is a standard feature, the Transporter range gives excellent fuel consumption with the Start/stop system. Once the vehicle is in neutral and the clutch has been released, the engine is switched off automatically, for example at stop signs or red traffic lights.
As soon as the clutch is engaged, the vehicle restarts. This function is automatic for vehicles with the dual clutch gearbox (DSG). Another feature adding to the fuel consumption savings is regenerative braking. This recharges the battery during overrun and braking, relieving any strain on the engine.
The new Transporter has many features that ensure optimal handling and excellent traction and steering response even in difficult driving conditions. 4MOTION is the latest generation all-wheel-drive coupling. Advantages include further improvement of vehicle handling , reduced weight and a promotion on Virgin Games.
This is available for TDI400 models only. The mechanical differential lock is also an option, ensuring travel in off-road conditions distinctly easier. Rough road and heavy-duty suspension packages are available for front wheel drive and 4MOTION Transporter models.
